READING QUESTIONNAIRE
NAME Jazz Johnson
READING BACKGROUND:
- Do you remember learning to read? What early memories of learning to read stand out in your mind? I do remember learning to read. I remember that I memorized the book "Hop On Pop" and then applied the words I'd learned from there to other books.
- Did you like to read when you were a child? Yes! My mom is a big reader so she passed it down to me.
- Did your parents or other adults read to you a lot when you were little? Do you remember any favorite storybooks? Yes. My parents read to me quite a bit, and when I go older I read to them sometimes. My best memory is my dad reading me Winnie the Pooh. He did all the voices. It was awesome! I can't really think of a favorite story book at the moment. That was so long ago.
- Do your parents read often? What do they read? My dad doesn't read books often but he reads the news. My mom reads everything and often. Like I said she is a big reader.
- Do you like to read for pleasure at all? If so, what kinds of things do you read? I pretty much only read for pleasure at the moment. I read all kinds of things. Classics, YA, Sci-fi/Fanstasy, Contemporary, Non-Fiction. I like all sorts of things as long as I can get into the story and the writing style.
- If you do not like reading, when did you begin to dislike or have trouble with reading? This question doesn't apply to me. LOL!
- Estimate the number of books you own. How many of those books matter to you? Gosh! It's got to be in the hundreds somewhere. Never thought to count. I would say that I've enjoyed at least 70% of my collection but I haven't read them all yet.
- Estimate the number of books in your household. Isn't this the same thing as the last question?
- What are some of your personal interests? Do you remember reading anything in connection with any of these interests? Explain. I have been known to read a few things on true crime and forensic psychology. They are just things I always have found interesting. My new thing is reading about the memory palace technique. Obviously because I am a dancer I have read quite a few things about dance. I also like to read comic books.
- Will improving your reading skills be helpful to you? Why or why not? Improving your reading skills is always good. It keeps the brain exercised.
READING SPEED:
- Do you consider yourself a slow or a fast reader? It depends. I read some things really fast and some things slow. I think I just depends on my mood and how interesting the material is to me.
- What kinds of reading have you had trouble finishing in school? I never liked science or geography. Also in the 9 weeks I went to public high school hated almost all the sections for honors English. So glad I switched to correspondence school.
- Do you spend a lot of time re-reading? Do you ever give up on reading assignments because they take too long? Explain. When reading certain things that are assigned I have been known to re-read a lot and give up when it takes to long. ADD will do that to you sometimes.
READING CONCENTRATION:
- Do you have trouble staying focused while you read? Explain. It depends on what it is. I can sometimes really hyper focus on a book. Other times not so much. I obviously can't focus on just one book at a time since I'm reading at least six books at once lately.
- Do you often find yourself thinking of other things as you read? Try to explain what you experience when you are trying to read. Yes. Especially if I think that I relate to something about the book or it reminds me of something else. Occasionally I just pause because I think of something I have to do.
- When you read at home or school, do you have trouble blocking out distractions, such as noise? Do you listen to music or watch TV when you are studying or reading? I don't have problems blocking things out. In fact I often read better when there is noise in the back ground. I read quite a lot in front of the TV or while listening to music. I can read when it is quite too.
READING COMPREHENSION:
- Do you visualize, or see pictures in your head, while you are reading? What kinds of reading material do you find easiest to visualize? If your aren't visualizing pictures you probably aren't enjoying the book or getting what the material is about. So yes, I do see pictures in my head. Anything that is fiction is pretty simple for me to visualize.
- What kinds of reading material do you find most difficult to understand? Why do you think these types of reading are difficult for you? Like I said I have always had a lot of trouble with science books in school. I just feel like they are written in a way that explains things like you already have an understanding of it. They just don't break things down as much as I would like. I totally understand science when I'm watching a documentary because they seem to break things down better.
- Do you ever feel that you are understanding while you are reading, but are unable to remember the information once you are done? Explain. I haven't particularly had this problem. I might forget parts of a book after I haven't read it in awhile, but I think almost everyone that doesn't have eidetic memory would have that problem. Haha!
So that's it. Hope you enjoyed my reading thoughts. Keep it shiny!
