The Book Nook - How to Read More Than One Book at Once

Hey! It's book day. I got to thinking I'm one of the those people that likes to read several books at once. I have reading A.D.D I guess. It's just more fun for me if I can experience a lot of different characters and worlds at the same time. I think of it as visiting the characters in each book for awhile. I'm reading at least six books now. I've noticed that occasionally people will ask me how reading multiple books works. So I decided to write a little break down on how it works for me.

1. Mix Up The Choices

The number one question I get when I tell people I can read a least six books at once is: Don't you get the stories mixed up? My answer is usually no. The reason for that is that I don't read more than two books with in the same genre. If you're reading a Fantasy, a classic novel, a dystopia, and a mystery you are certainly not going to mix up your story lines. If you're reading 5 or 6 books that are all general fiction there is a chance you might get confused.

The reason I say that you should read no more than two of the same genre is because I have had my few instances of confusion. For example: I opened my e-reader once thinking that I was reading my Sherlock Holmes novel. Then I had several minutes of confusion, because I didn't understand where I was in the book. It turns out I had actually opened to a page in The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest. Both are mysteries and both stories use deductive reasoning quite a lot, so hence the confusion. Opps! Luckily I was only reading two books in the genre. Plus, technically one of the two was a classic novel so I realized when modern terms were used that I had the wrong book.

2. Mix Up The Lengths

If you're reading a really long book make sure your other choices are a little bit shorter in comparison. This is especially good advice if you're reading something that is well over 500 pages. Completing my shorter books while I'm reading my longer one gives me a sense of accomplishment.

3. Don't Be Afraid of Letting Go

If you find that there is one book in your current reading collection that you just don't feel in the mood to read anymore drop it from the list. You can always go back and pick it up when you're in the mood for it again, but you won't be having fun if you're forcing yourself to read it when you really want to read your other book choices more.

4. Carry Books Around and Place Them Around House

If you want to read more than one book it's all about finding those calm moments when you can read. Be prepared for them to pop up. The key is to have at least one book you can carry around with you under your arm or in a handbag. If you have a e-reader or a tablet this is a lot easier. If you don't just carry your smaller paperbacks. The second key is placing books in places you know you'll read. I like to read in the bath so I keep a book in the bathroom. I only suggest reading you physical books in the bath. No e-readers! You'll be paranoid about getting them wet. Also, in case your wondering, it's easy to read in the tub. Keep your hands dry and rest your elbows on the bottom of the tub if you can.

5. Comic Books and Short Stories

If you have a little reading time but don't feel like getting involved with some of your longer fiction choices pull out the shorter stuff. I make it a habit to pick out a least one comic book or short story collection with in my book choice. Great quick reads before a nap or during lunch.

Well that my list of tips for reading multiple books. I highly suggest giving it a try, but I know it's not for everyone. Some people are just one book at a time people. Even I occasionally am a one book at a time person. Hope everyone has a great day. Happy reading!
