Short Story Review: Button, Button

Story Title: Button, Button
From: The Box
Author: Richard Matheson

Summary

A married couple receives a mysterious box containing a button. If they press the button they receive fifty thousand dollars, but it also means that someone they don't know will die.

My Thoughts

Button, Button explores how greed can be a strong temptation. It also explores the idea that greed comes at a terrible price. It was a concept that I found very interesting. I liked that the idea was presented with thoughtfulness and irony. I enjoyed Matheson's writing style. He used quite a bit of dialogue and had a way of writing characters that made you feel like you knew them in a very short span of time. There was something about the way the story was written that made me feel like I was one of the characters. It made you think about what you would do if put in the same situation. I have to say I agreed with the husband in the story who strongly believed that the button should not be pushed.

Button, Button happens to be the story the movie The Box is based on. I have to say I enjoyed the short story far more than the film. The acting and the special effects were great, but I truly disliked what they did with the plot. I love science fiction but the film adaptation was just too weird. It almost reached the point where it didn't make much sense to me. I understand that they had to add story elements to fill out the film, but I think they got a little carried away. The movie doesn't really study the same concepts as the short story, which is what I enjoyed most about the story when I read it. In summary, read Button, Button skip the movie The Box.
